Tenths and hundredths

What this lesson shows

6/10 = 60/100 on a 10 × 10 grid: each column holds ten hundredths.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 6/10 = ?/100. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. A column is 1 tenth
  2. A small square is 1 hundredth
  3. Count by tens
  4. Multiply the top and the bottom by 10

Helping at home

Draw a 10 × 10 grid and shade the tenths as whole columns. Each column is 10 small squares, so count the shaded squares by tens. Wholes stay as they are.

If your kid gets stuck

Each tenth is 10 hundredths.
