4th grade math · Unit 6: Decimals and money

Adding and subtracting decimals

What this lesson shows

Line up the places, then add like whole numbers, with money.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: $12.45 + $3.80. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Estimate first
  2. Line up the points
  3. Work from the right
  4. Bring the point down

Helping at home

Estimate to the nearest dollar first. Write the amounts one under the other with the points lined up, then work from the right: pennies, dimes, dollars. Bring the point straight down, and compare the answer with the estimate.

If your kid gets stuck

Estimate first, then line up the points.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
