4th grade math · Unit 6: Decimals and money

Line up the decimal points

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

30.1 + 2.74: tenths go with tenths. Write 30.10 to see it.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 30.1 + 2.74. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Points over points
  2. Fill empty places with 0
  3. Work from the right
  4. Check with an estimate

Helping at home

Write the numbers one under the other with the points lined up, never the last digits. Fill any empty place with a 0, so 30.1 becomes 30.10, then work from the right. A whole number like 8 has its point after the ones: 8.00.

If your kid gets stuck

Line up the points, then fill the empty places with 0.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
