Comparing decimals

What this lesson shows

Compare from the left, or rename both in hundredths.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 0.45 ○ 0.5. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Line up the points
  2. Compare from the left
  3. Or rename in hundredths
  4. Farther right is bigger

Helping at home

Write the two decimals one under the other with the points lined up. Compare place by place from the left, or add a 0 so both are in hundredths. Write <, >, or = in the circle, the open side facing the bigger number.

If your kid gets stuck

Line up the points first.

Standards

  • Common Core 4.NF.C.7
Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual model.
