3rd grade math · Unit 5: Fractions

Same size wholes

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

Compare fractions only on wholes the same size.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1/2 ○ 1/4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Different wholes cannot compare
  2. Draw same-size bars
  3. Then compare the parts

Helping at home

Always draw both fractions on bars the same length. A fraction is a part of its own whole, so a piece of a bigger bar says nothing about a smaller one.

If your kid gets stuck

Write <, >, or =. Make both bars the same length.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 3.NF.A.3d
Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
