3rd grade math · Unit 5: Fractions

Naming fractions

What this lesson shows

4/3, 4 thirds, four-thirds, and one and one third.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 4/3. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Standard form
  2. Numeral-word form
  3. Word form
  4. Mixed number in words

Helping at home

Shade the fraction on bars first. Numeral-word form is the top number and the name of the pieces. Word form spells both in words, with a hyphen. For the mixed number, count the full bars, then the parts left.

If your kid gets stuck

Draw it on bars, then count the full bars.

Watch it with Lux
