3rd grade math · Unit 5: Fractions

Equal fractions, one point

What this lesson shows

1/2 and 2/4 land on one point of two given lines.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1/2 ○ 2/4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Two lines the same length
  2. Mark each fraction
  3. Same point, equal fractions

Helping at home

Draw two number lines from 0 to 1, the same length, one cut for each bottom number. Mark each fraction by counting jumps from 0. If both points line up, the fractions are equal.

If your kid gets stuck

Do the two points line up?
