3rd grade math · Unit 5: Fractions

Counting unit fractions

What this lesson shows

3/4 is 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4, and 7/4 goes past one whole.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 7/4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. One part is a unit fraction
  2. Count to one whole
  3. Keep counting past it
  4. Add the unit fractions

Helping at home

Draw bars cut into the bottom number of parts and shade one part at a time, counting as you go. Write one unit fraction for each part shaded, with a plus between them.

If your kid gets stuck

Write 1 over the bottom number once for each part.
