3rd grade math · Unit 5: Fractions

Same bottom or same top

What this lesson shows

Same denominator: count parts. Same numerator: compare piece size.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 3/8 ○ 5/8. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Same bottom: count the pieces
  2. Same top: compare piece size
  3. Check on same-size bars

Helping at home

First check which number matches. If the bottoms match, the pieces are the same size, so the bigger top wins. If the tops match, the count is the same, so the smaller bottom has the bigger pieces and wins. Draw same-size bars to check.

If your kid gets stuck

Write <, >, or =. Which number matches?

Standards

  • Common Core 3.NF.A.3d
Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
