5th grade math · Unit 7: Adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions

A third of it, or a third of a yard?

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

"Gives away 1/3 of the rope" is 1/3 × 3/4. "Gives away 1/3 yard" is 3/4 − 1/3.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1/3 × 3/4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Of the rope: multiply, then subtract
  2. Of a yard: just subtract
  3. Ask: of what?

Helping at home

Ask "a fraction of what?" A fraction of the rope is a part of it: multiply first, then subtract to find what is left. A fraction of a yard is a length: just subtract. Draw both on a yard bar to see the difference.

If your kid gets stuck

Ask: a fraction of what? Then multiply or just subtract.
