Area with fraction sides

What this lesson shows

3/4 yard by 2/3 yard tiled with twelfths of a square yard: 6/12 square yard. Then the perimeter.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 3/4 × 2/3. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Tile 1 square yard
  2. Count the tiles covered
  3. Add four sides for the perimeter

Helping at home

Cut a square yard into columns and rows by the two bottoms. The rectangle covers tops times tops of those tiles, so the area is tops times tops over bottoms times bottoms, in square yards. For the perimeter, rename the sides in the same parts and add all four.

If your kid gets stuck

Area: multiply. Perimeter: add all four sides.

Find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths by tiling it with unit squares of the appropriate unit fraction side lengths, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths. Multiply fractional side lengths to find areas of rectangles, and represent fraction products as rectangular areas.
