4th grade math · Unit 5: Fractions

Fractions greater than one

What this lesson shows

7/4 and 1 3/4 are the same amount, shown with fraction bars.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 7/4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. A whole is all its parts
  2. Fill whole bars
  3. Shade the rest
  4. Wholes and the rest: a mixed number

Helping at home

Draw bars for wholes, each cut into the fraction’s parts, and shade one part at a time until you reach the top number. Full bars are the wholes; the rest is the fraction part.

If your kid gets stuck

How many full bars? How many parts left?
