4th grade math · Unit 5: Fractions

Adding mixed numbers

What this lesson shows

2 5/6 + 1 4/6: add wholes, add sixths, then 9/6 becomes 1 3/6.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 2 5/6 + 1 4/6. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Add the wholes
  2. Add the parts
  3. Parts over 1? Make a whole
  4. Put it together

Helping at home

Add the wholes, then the parts. If the parts make a whole or more, trade a whole’s worth of parts for 1 whole. No simplifying: 4 3/6 is a right answer.

If your kid gets stuck

Wholes first, then parts. Do the parts make a whole?
