Scaled pictographs and bar graphs

What this lesson shows

Each picture stands for 2, so the key multiplies. A bar scale starts at 0.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: soccer 8, baseball 6, swimming 10, key 2. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Read the key
  2. Faces times the key
  3. Scale from 0 by the key
  4. Stop each bar at its count

Helping at home

Divide each count by the key to know how many faces to draw, and write the key under the pictograph. For the bar graph, start the scale at 0 and count up by the key, then stop each bar at its count.

If your kid gets stuck

How many faces? Divide by the key.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 3.MD.B.3
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step "how many more" and "how many less" problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
