Questions from graphs

What this lesson shows

How many more, and how many in all, from a bar graph.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: apples 20, bananas 15, grapes 25, key 5. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Read each bar
  2. How many more: subtract
  3. In all: add

Helping at home

Read every bar from the scale first and write its number on top. "How many more" compares two bars, so subtract the smaller from the bigger. "How many in all" adds every bar.

If your kid gets stuck

Write each bar’s number on top first.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 3.MD.B.3
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step "how many more" and "how many less" problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
