Read the key

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

4 pictures at 5 each is 20, not 4. One grid square is not always one.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: apples 20, bananas 15, grapes 25, key 5. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Read the key first
  2. Faces times the key
  3. Read the scale, not the spaces

Helping at home

Read the key before counting anything. Multiply the number of faces by the key. On a bar graph, read the number on the scale where the bar stops, never the number of spaces.

If your kid gets stuck

What does one face stand for?

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 3.MD.B.3
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step "how many more" and "how many less" problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
