Kindergarten math · Unit 9: Measuring

Measure with paper clips

What this lesson shows

A pencil is 6 paper clips long, clips end to end with no gaps and no overlaps.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: a pencil 6 paper clips long. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Start at one end
  2. Clips end to end
  3. No gaps, no overlaps
  4. Count, and say the unit

Helping at home

Read each box aloud. Your kid counts the clips under the thing and says the number with the unit: "5 paper clips long." Measure a spoon with real clips too.

If your kid gets stuck

Count the clips. Say "paper clips long".

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 1.MD.A.2
Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. Limit to contexts where the object being measured is spanned by a whole number of length units with no gaps or overlaps.
