5th grade math · Unit 9: Shapes and volume

Volume by formula

What this lesson shows

V = l × w × h and V = B × h for a 15 by 32 by 10 foot room: base area times layers.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 15 × 32 × 10. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. V = l × w × h
  2. V = B × h
  3. Cubic units

Helping at home

V = l × w × h multiplies the three edges. V = B × h starts from B, the area of the base, and stacks one layer of it for each unit of height. Both give the same volume, in cubic units.

If your kid gets stuck

Find B, the area of the base, first.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
