5th grade math · Unit 9: Shapes and volume

Volume by packing cubes

What this lesson shows

A box packed layer by layer: 6 rows of 4, 6 layers, 144 cubic units.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 4 × 6 × 6. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Count one layer
  2. Count the layers
  3. Multiply for the volume

Helping at home

Count the cubes in the bottom layer first: rows times cubes in a row. Then multiply by the number of layers. The count is the volume, in cubic units.

If your kid gets stuck

Count one layer, then the layers.

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 5.MD.C.4
Measure volumes by counting unit cubes, using cubic cm, cubic in, cubic ft, and improvised units.
  • Common Core 5.MD.C.5a
Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with whole-number side lengths by packing it with unit cubes, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths, equivalently by multiplying the height by the area of the base. Represent threefold whole-number products as volumes, e.g., to represent the associative property of multiplication.
