5th grade math · Unit 9: Shapes and volume

Solid figures

What this lesson shows

Prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and spheres by their faces, bases, and apex.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: a rectangular prism, a square pyramid, a cylinder, a cone, a sphere. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Count the bases
  2. Flat faces or a curved surface?
  3. Look for an apex

Helping at home

Count the bases first. 2 matching bases: a prism (flat faces) or a cylinder (curved surface). 1 base and an apex: a pyramid (triangle faces) or a cone (curved surface). No base: a sphere. The shape of the base names a prism or pyramid.

If your kid gets stuck

Count the bases. Look for an apex.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
