5th grade math · Unit 9: Shapes and volume

Every name that fits

What this lesson shows

A square is a rectangle, a rhombus, and a parallelogram, on a family chart of quadrilaterals.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: a square. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Build the family chart
  2. Each name adds a rule
  3. Every name above fits

Helping at home

Draw the family chart. A trapezoid has at least 1 pair of parallel sides, a parallelogram 2 pairs. A rectangle is a parallelogram with 4 right angles, a rhombus one with 4 equal sides, and a square is both. Follow the lines up: every name above a shape fits it.

If your kid gets stuck

Follow the lines up the family chart.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
