What this lesson shows
A line plot of books in each backpack: most dots stack at 2, 3, and 4, and one sits far out at 11. The data clusters from 2 to 4, and 11 is an outlier. A new student most likely carries 2 to 4 books.
The worked example
The lesson works this one step by step: Books in each backpack: 3, 2, 4, 11, 3, 4, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.
The steps
- Cluster: where most Xs stack
- Gap: a stretch with no Xs
- Outlier: far from the rest
- Range: most minus least
- Median: the middle X
- Predict from the cluster
Helping at home
Your kid makes the line plot first, then talks about its shape: where most Xs stack, where there are none, and which X sits far from the rest. Ask what a new value would most likely be, and why.
If your kid gets stuck
Look for where most Xs stack up.
Watch it with Lux
With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
