5th grade math · Unit 10: Data

Scatterplots

What this lesson shows

Hours practiced and free throws made for 6 players: each pair is one dot. Then read the plot: who made the most, and how many more than the player who practiced 2 hours?

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: A (3, 10), B (1, 4), C (5, 15), D (2, 7), E (6, 12), F (4, 11). Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. One dot for each pair
  2. Across, then up
  3. Leave the dots apart
  4. Read the dots, then add or subtract

Helping at home

Hours go across and free throws go up, each on a labeled scale. Each pair is one dot: across to the hours, up to the free throws. The dots stay apart, never joined. Then read the dots and write the math: subtract to compare, and add first when two players count together.

If your kid gets stuck

Across to the hours, up to the free throws. One dot for each player.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
