5th grade math · Unit 10: Data

Line plots in halves, thirds, and fourths

What this lesson shows

Cups of water in ten glasses, an X over each amount.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: Water in each glass, in cups: 2/4, 3/4, 1 1/4, 3/4, 2/4, 1 2/4, 3/4, 1, 1 3/4, 1/4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Mark the smallest part
  2. Halves on fourths ticks
  3. An X for each amount

Helping at home

Run the line from 0 past the biggest amount, marked in the smallest part in the data. A half on a line in fourths goes on the 2 fourths tick. Then make an X for each amount and count the Xs.

If your kid gets stuck

Mark the line in the smallest part.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 5.MD.B.2
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
