What this lesson shows
Temperatures over a week fit a line graph, which shows change. Votes for pets fit a bar graph, which compares groups. A bar graph whose bars are not drawn to scale misleads the reader.
The worked example
The lesson works this one step by step: noon temperatures 55, 60, 70, 65, 75. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.
The steps
- Change over time: a line graph
- Compare groups: a bar graph
- Add a title and labels
- Check the bars against the numbers
Helping at home
Read each problem aloud. First your kid says whether the data changes over time or compares groups, then picks the graph and draws it with a title and labels. Ask what the graph shows, and how someone could make it mislead.
If your kid gets stuck
Does it change over time, or compare groups?
Watch it with Lux
With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
