4th grade math · Unit 1: Place value to a million

Rounding: closer to which?

What this lesson shows

Put the number between two round numbers on a line, mark the middle, pick the closer one.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 4,372 to the nearest hundred. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Find the two ends
  2. Mark the middle
  3. Put the number on the line
  4. Pick the closer end

Helping at home

Name the number in the unit you round to: 4,372 is 43 hundreds and 72 ones, so it sits between 43 and 44 hundreds. Draw a line with those two ends, mark the middle, and put the number on it. It rounds to the end it is closer to.

If your kid gets stuck

Which two round numbers is it between?
