4th grade math · Unit 1: Place value to a million

Comparing big numbers

What this lesson shows

Compare from the biggest place down until the digits differ, on a scaled number line.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 45,382 ○ 45,917. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Line them up
  2. Compare from the left
  3. Stop where they differ
  4. Open side to the bigger

Helping at home

Line the numbers up from the ones. Count the digits first: more digits is bigger. With the same number of digits, compare from the biggest place until two digits differ. The open side of the sign faces the bigger number.

If your kid gets stuck

Line them up from the ones first.
