4th grade math · Unit 1: Place value to a million

Renaming numbers

What this lesson shows

2,340 is 234 tens. Renaming now makes dividing easier later.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 2,340 = ? tens. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Cover the places to the right
  2. Count what is left
  3. Multiply back to check

Helping at home

To count tens, cover the ones place: the digits left over are the number of tens. For hundreds, cover the tens and ones, and for thousands, cover three places. Check by multiplying back by 10, 100, or 1,000.

If your kid gets stuck

Cover the places smaller than the unit.
