4th grade math · Unit 1: Place value to a million

More digits, more value

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

864 is less than 2,001, whatever the first digit says.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 864 ○ 2,310. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Line them up from the ones
  2. An empty place is 0
  3. More digits, more value

Helping at home

Before looking at any digit, line the numbers up from the ones. A number with no digit in a big place has 0 there. Compare from the biggest place: more digits means more value.

If your kid gets stuck

Count the digits before you compare.
