3rd grade math · Unit 1: Multiplication and division

Two kinds of division

What this lesson shows

12 ÷ 3 as 3 groups, how many in each, and as groups of 3, how many groups.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 12 ÷ 3. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Share into groups
  2. Or make groups of a size
  3. Same answer both ways

Helping at home

Draw it two ways. Sharing: draw the groups first and deal the dots out one at a time. Making groups: loop the dots into groups of the second number and count the loops. Both give the same answer.

If your kid gets stuck

Sharing: draw the groups first.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 3.OA.A.2
Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 56 ÷ 8 as the number of objects in each share when 56 objects are partitioned equally into 8 shares, or as a number of shares when 56 objects are partitioned into equal shares of 8 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a number of shares or a number of groups can be expressed as 56 ÷ 8.
