Kindergarten math · Unit 3: Sorting and counting

Wants and needs

What this lesson shows

Food, a coat, and a home are needs; a toy and a treat are wants. Sort each picture, and tell how earning money pays for them.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: food, ball, coat, treat, home: needs or wants. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. A need: you must have it
  2. A want: nice to have
  3. Sort each one
  4. Needs first

Helping at home

Name each picture together. Ask: could you live without it? Your kid circles each need and puts an X on each want. At the store, ask which things in the cart are needs.

If your kid gets stuck

Could you live without it?

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
