Skills earn income

What this lesson shows

A sitter who took a first-aid class earns $8 an hour instead of $6. Skills and work, called human capital, are what a worker trades for income: more skill or more hours, more income.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: a sitter at $6, then $8 an hour, for 3 and 5 hours. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Income = hours × pay for one hour
  2. More skill: more pay each hour
  3. More hours: more income

Helping at home

Read each story aloud. Your kid multiplies hours by the pay for one hour, before and after the class, then subtracts to see how much more the new skill earns.

If your kid gets stuck

Hours times pay for one hour is the income.
