3rd grade math · Unit 7: Measurement and time

Measuring to the quarter inch

What this lesson shows

A ruler zoomed in: halves and quarters between whole inches.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 4 3/4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Halves
  2. Quarters
  3. Count the quarter spaces

Helping at home

Line the ruler’s 0 up with the start of the line. Find the whole inch, then count quarter spaces past it: the middle mark is a half, the shorter marks are quarters.

If your kid gets stuck

Start at 0, not at the ruler’s edge.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
