3rd grade math · Unit 7: Measurement and time

Counting up to make change

What this lesson shows

A $3.65 snack paid with $5: count up from the cost with coins and bills, to $3.75, $4, then $5. The change is $1.35, with as few coins as possible.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: $3.65, paid with $5. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Start at the price
  2. Coins to a whole dollar
  3. Bills to what was paid
  4. Add them up

Helping at home

Start at the price and count up like a cashier: small coins to the next 5 or 10 cents, bigger coins to a whole dollar, then $1 bills to what was paid. Add the coins and bills for the change.

If your kid gets stuck

Start at the price and count up.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
