3rd grade math · Unit 2: Lines, shapes, area, and perimeter

Points, lines, segments, rays

What this lesson shows

Draw each one and name it by its ends.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: point P, segment BE, ray CD, line FG. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. A point is a dot
  2. A segment has 2 endpoints
  3. A ray has 1
  4. A line has none

Helping at home

Mark each point with a dot and a capital letter. A segment stops at both points, a ray gets one arrow past its second point, and a line gets an arrow at both ends. Name a ray from its endpoint.

If your kid gets stuck

Count the endpoints first: 2, 1, or none.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
