3rd grade math · Unit 2: Lines, shapes, area, and perimeter

Parallel and perpendicular

What this lesson shows

Lines that never meet, and lines that meet at a square corner, tested with a paper corner.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: line BC parallel to line DE, line FG perpendicular to line HJ. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Parallel: never meet
  2. Same distance apart
  3. Perpendicular: a square corner
  4. Test with a paper corner

Helping at home

Draw parallel lines the same distance apart all along, like railroad tracks. Draw perpendicular lines so they meet at a square corner, and test it with the corner of a sheet of paper. Mark a square corner with a little square.

If your kid gets stuck

Test each corner with a paper corner.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
