2nd grade math · Unit 9: Shapes and perimeter

Rows and columns of squares

What this lesson shows

Split a rectangle into same-size squares in rows and columns, then count them row by row.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 3 rows of 4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Lines across: rows
  2. Lines down: columns
  3. Same-size squares
  4. Count row by row

Helping at home

Draw lines across, the same space apart, to make the rows, then lines down to make the columns. Every square comes out the same size. Count row by row, adding one row each time.

If your kid gets stuck

Lines across make rows. Lines down make columns.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
