2nd grade math · Unit 9: Shapes and perimeter

Naming flat shapes

What this lesson shows

Triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon, drawn with a ruler. Count the sides and vertices.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: pentagon (question 1). Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Straight sides
  2. A vertex is a corner
  3. Count the sides to name it

Helping at home

Draw each side with a ruler so it is straight. Count the sides and the vertices: 3 is a triangle, 4 a square or rectangle, 5 a pentagon, 6 a hexagon, 8 an octagon.

If your kid gets stuck

Count the sides.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
