2nd grade math · Unit 9: Shapes and perimeter

Faces, edges, and corners

What this lesson shows

A cube and a box: each face is a flat shape, a square or a rectangle. Count the faces, the edges, and the corners, called vertices.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: A cube and a box. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Face: a flat side
  2. Edge: where two faces meet
  3. Vertex: a corner
  4. Cube: 6, 12, 8

Helping at home

Hold a real box or a block. Touch each face and count it, turning the box so none is counted twice. Then run a finger along each edge, and touch each corner.

If your kid gets stuck

Count the ones you see, then the hidden ones.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
