5th grade math · Unit 5: Multiplying and dividing decimals

Times 0.1 and 0.01

What this lesson shows

7.8 × 0.1 is a tenth of 7.8: each digit one place right, 0.78. Then 7.8 × 0.01 = 0.078.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 7.8 × 0.1. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Put it in the chart
  2. Times 0.1: one place right
  3. Times 0.01: two places right

Helping at home

Put the number in a place value chart. Times 0.1 is one tenth of it: each digit moves one place right. Times 0.01 moves each digit two places. The point stays between the ones and the tenths.

If your kid gets stuck

Use a place value chart. The digits move, not the point.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
