5th grade math · Unit 5: Multiplying and dividing decimals

A tenth of it, not ten times

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

7.8 × 0.1 is 0.78, not 78. Times a tenth makes it smaller.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 7.8 × 0.1. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Bigger or smaller?
  2. Times 0.1: one place right
  3. Times 10: one place left

Helping at home

Before moving any digit, ask whether the answer should be bigger or smaller. Times 0.1 is less than 1, so the answer is smaller: each digit moves one place right. Times 10 moves each digit one place left.

If your kid gets stuck

Bigger or smaller? Then move the digits that way.
