5th grade math · Unit 4: Dividing whole numbers

Prime factorization

What this lesson shows

Split 60 into a factor tree: 6 × 10, then 2 × 3 × 2 × 5. Every branch ends in a prime, so 60 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 5.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 60. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Split into two factors, never 1
  2. Ring each prime: that branch is done
  3. Write the primes, smallest first

Helping at home

Start a factor tree: split the number into two factors, neither of them 1. Split again until every branch ends in a prime, and ring each prime. Write the ringed primes smallest first, then multiply them back to check.

If your kid gets stuck

Split it into any two factors other than 1.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
