5th grade math · Unit 4: Dividing whole numbers

When the first guess is wrong

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

117 ÷ 24 rounded to 120 ÷ 20 says 6, but 6 × 24 = 144 is too much. Step down to 4.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 1,176 ÷ 24. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Round to guess
  2. Multiply to check
  3. Step down until it fits

Helping at home

A guess from rounding is only a start. Multiply the guess by the divisor before writing it: if the product is too big, try one less; if what is left is as big as the divisor, try one more.

If your kid gets stuck

Multiply to check each guess before you write it.
