5th grade math · Unit 8: Fractions as division

How many fit?

What this lesson shows

3/4 ÷ 1/8: a strip cut in eighths shows 3/4 as 6 eighths, so 6 pieces of 1/8 fit. 2 ÷ 2/3: two wholes cut in thirds hold 3 groups of 2/3.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 3/4 ÷ 1/8. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Dividing by a fraction: how many fit?
  2. Cut into the smaller pieces
  3. Count the pieces or groups
  4. Dividing by a whole number: share it

Helping at home

Dividing by a fraction asks how many of it fit. Draw a strip, cut it into the smaller pieces, and count the pieces or groups that fit. Dividing a fraction by a whole number shares it into that many equal groups.

If your kid gets stuck

Draw it. How many fit, or how much is in each group?

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.
