4th grade math · Unit 2: Multiplication

The standard algorithm, two digits by two

What this lesson shows

34 × 26, each step said in place value: "6 ones times 4 ones..." Required in Grade 4.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 34 × 26. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Estimate first
  2. Multiply by the ones
  3. Write a 0, then multiply by the tens
  4. Add the two rows, and check

Helping at home

Estimate first by rounding each number to the nearest ten. Say each product in place value: "6 ones times 3 tens is 18 tens". Write the 0 before multiplying by the tens, then check the answer against the estimate.

If your kid gets stuck

Estimate first, then write the 0 in the second row.
