4th grade math · Unit 7: Data

Answering questions from data

What this lesson shows

Read a plot, then add or subtract to answer how much longer.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: Pencil lengths, in inches: 3 2/4, 4 1/4, 3 1/4, 4 2/4, 3 2/4, 4 3/4, 4 1/4, 3 2/4. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Read the plot
  2. Longest and shortest
  3. How much longer: subtract
  4. End to end: add

Helping at home

Make the line plot first, then find the longest and the shortest at its two ends. "How much longer" is a subtraction; "end to end" is an addition. Work the wholes, then the parts, and trade a whole for its parts when the parts make one.

If your kid gets stuck

Find the longest and the shortest first.

Watch it with Lux

With Lux, this lesson is a narrated video and a printed page your kid works on. Then Lux helps with the same math on their own worksheet, one question at a time.

Standards

  • Common Core 4.MD.B.4
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.
