4th grade math · Unit 7: Data

Likely, unlikely, as a fraction

What this lesson shows

A bag of 3 red and 1 blue marble: red is likely, blue unlikely, green impossible. Blue's probability is 1 out of 4, written 1/4.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 3 red and 1 blue marbles: blue. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Probability: that color out of all
  2. More than 1 half: likely
  3. Less than 1 half: unlikely
  4. None in the bag: 0, impossible

Helping at home

Count the marbles of the color, then all the marbles. The fraction is that color out of all of them. Your kid compares it with 1 half: more is likely, less is unlikely, none is impossible.

If your kid gets stuck

That color out of all the marbles.
