2nd grade math · Unit 3: Adding and subtracting within 100

Two-step word problems

What this lesson shows

A bus has 27 kids. 12 get off, then 8 more get off at the next stop: 27 − 12 = 15, and 15 − 8 = 7.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 27 on the bus, −12, −8. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. What do we find?
  2. Step 1: the first stop
  3. Step 2: the next stop
  4. Check by working back

Helping at home

Read the story twice and say what the question asks. Write one equation for each stop, then check by working back to the first number.

If your kid gets stuck

What happens at each stop?
