2nd grade math · Unit 3: Adding and subtracting within 100

Adding tens and ones

What this lesson shows

38 + 45 makes 7 tens and 13 ones. 10 ones make a new ten, so 83.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 38 + 45 = □. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. Add the tens
  2. Add the ones
  3. Ten ones make a new ten

Helping at home

Show each number as tens and ones. Add the tens, then add the ones. When there are 10 ones or more, trade 10 of them for a new ten.

If your kid gets stuck

Add the tens first, then the ones.
