2nd grade math · Unit 5: Equal parts and time

Short hand, long hand

What this lesson shows

Fixes a mistake

At 4:10 the short hand is just past 4 and the long hand is on 2. Swapped, it reads 2:20.

The worked example

The lesson works this one step by step: 4:10 p.m. Then your kid tries one like it on paper.

The steps

  1. The short hand tells the hour
  2. The long hand counts minutes
  3. Count by 5s to it

Helping at home

Find the short hand first: it tells the hour it has passed. Then the long hand: count by 5s round to it for the minutes. Draw the short hand shorter.

If your kid gets stuck

Short hand: hour. Long hand: minutes.
